Geological Approach for Landfill Site Selection: A Case Study of Vršac Municipality, Serbia

One of the biggest problems environmental protection in Serbia is landfills. It often a case that economic interests are predominant landfill sitting; thus, most landfills not located according to standards. This study shows detailed geological data assets combined with geographical modeling represents reliable way define and locate site. Geological evaluation discussed detail regard bedrock lithology, quaternary geology, structure, hydrogeology, surface runoff patterns, topography. An approach combining geology presented for determining sites suitable selection respect their geologic favorability. As opposed numerous research papers on this topic, methodological procedure, special importance devoted analysis criteria. In way, it significantly easier determine area best characteristics due structure lithology which unequivocally precisely indicates inadequate territories candidate sites. The multicriteria decision (MCDA) based criteria upgraded road (primary, residential, secondary, tertiary), settlements network, railway, airport, infrastructure, land use, hypsometry aquifer, wetland, water. score values divided into four classes, i.e., restricted areas, but avoid, suitable, suitable. Combining led recognition two locations be favorable site area, 25.3% area.
